Herb Marshmallow
Althaea officinalis Perennial. Prefers moist, sandy soil, beautiful and well know for herbal medicinal uses. We use it in numerous herbal remedies here on the farm including our very popular and effective Cough Be Gone tea. Can grow up to 6 feet tall and is beautiful when in bloom where as the tall spikes have numerous flowers on each. This perennial self seeds easily and can also be propagated from root cuttings. The ancient Egyptians made a treat from the root of the Marsh Mallow. You can eat the flowers, leaves and roots of the marsh mallow plant.
Sow seeds in groups of 6 or so seeds, lightly cover and keep moist. Can take up to 4 weeks to germinate.
